A new trailer has surfaced for 20th Century Fox’s space travel adventure The Martian. The film, featuring Matt Damon (The Great Wall) top-lining an all-star cast, is the story of an astronaut (Damon) feared dead and abandoned on Mars by his crew. Damon’s Mark Watney is actually very much alive and must devise a way to survive the brutal Martian conditions long enough to reconnect with rescuers from home. Not knowing when or if he will be found, Watney devises systems to tame the Red Planet’s harsh conditions, growing food and harvesting water on a planet thought to have no life-sustaining properties. He is finally able to contact NASA, setting in motion plans to attempt a dangerous rescue effort.
The stellar supporting cast includes Jessica Chastain (Crimson Peak), Kristen Wiig (Ghostbusters), Kate Mara (Fantastic Four), Jeff Daniels (Dumb and Dumber To), Sean Bean (Jupiter Ascending), Chiwetel Ejiofor (12 Years a Slave), Donald Glover (Magic Mike XXL), and Michael Peña (Ant-Man).
Ridley Scott (Blade Runner) directs from a script by Drew Goddard (World War Z). The film is based on the popular debut novel by Andy Weir and the story has been praised for its technical accuracy. In an interview with the Los Angeles Times, NASA’s directory of planetary science Jim Green says that in spite of lots of Hollywood drama, the film is true to the science, technology and human cooperation necessary “to overcome major challenges” in space.
The Martian will be released in IMAX and 3D formats November 25. Check out the trailer below.
