Vincent D’Onofrio (The Judge) is in final negotiations to play the villain in the upcoming feature adaptation of the 70s cop show, CHiPs, according to The Hollywood Reporter. The movie will star Dax Shepard (This Is Where I Leave You) and Michael Peña (End of Watch) as the titular California Highway Patrolmen.
The casting makes sense, as D’Onofrio is coming off an acclaimed performance as Wilson “The Kingpin” Fisk on the Netflix original series Daredevil. In CHiPs he’ll play a ruthless former cop who has become a car-stealing ringleader.
Based on the hit 70s show, the film will follow two motorcycle cops – Jon Baker (Shepard) and Frank Poncherello (Peña). Shepard was brought on to write, direct, and star in the movie back in September. Shepard previously directed the action comedy Hit and Run with Kristen Bell (Frozen) and Bradley Cooper (American Sniper).
D’Onofrio has a lot of big projects in the works. Along with this summer’s Jurassic World, he will have the lead in the horror western Purgatory, and will also be in The Magnificent Seven remake.
CHiPs is currently in pre-production. No timeframe for release has been set.
