Frank Grillo (Warrior) has released two pictures of himself as Crossbones on the set of Captain America: Civil War via his Instagram page. The first image shows the actor decked out in his full armor while the second shows him without his mask.
Grillo played S.H.I.E.L.D’s S.T.R.I.K.E team commander, Brock Rumlow, in the previous Captain America film, Captain America: The Winter Soldier. Of course, S.H.I.E.L.D. was revealed to be led by members of Hydra in the movie. This made Grillo a formidable opponent for Captain America (Chris Evans), Black Widow (Scarlett Johansson), and Falcon (Anthony Mackie). Crossbones was originally a henchman for Red Skull and didn’t have a role in the Civil War books; it is likely that his character will tie the events of The Winter Soldier to Civil War.
Civil War is based on the highly regarded story arc of the same name where a tragedy involving some amateur inhumans accidentally destroys a school, murdering hundreds of children. This leads to a government-mandated superhero registration act. The issue divides The Avengers as well as the other heroes in the universe, with Tony Stark leading the pro-registration side and Captain America leading those against registering.
I see you. I know who you are. Now you’ll pay for this pic. #CROSSBONES

It’s unclear exactly what will change from the original source material, though Marvel planted the seeds for a divide between Tony Stark and Steve Rodgers during the wood-chopping scene in The Avengers: Age of Ultron, wherein Stark expressed an interest in not having to be a superhero forever while Rodgers sees their job as never being finished.
Civil War promises to have the largest collection of characters in any Marvel movie and will include Ant-Man/Scott Lang (Paul Rudd, They Came Together), Scarlet Witch/Wanda Maximoff (Elizabeth Olsen, Godzilla), Black Widow, Agent 13/Sharon Carter (Emily VanCamp, Captain America: The Winter Soldier), Hawkeye/Clint Barton (Jeremy Renner, Mission Impossible: Rogue Nation), The Winter Soldier/Bucky Barnes (Sebastian Stan, Ricki and the Flash), Black Panther/T’Challa (Chadwick Boseman, Get On Up), The Vision (Paul Bettany, Mortdecai), James Rhodes/War Machine (Don Cheadle, Iron Man 3) and Falcon. Martin Freeman (The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies) will also be in the film but his role has not been disclosed. There have also been rumors that Spider-Man will make his first appearance in the MCU with this movie. Asa Butterfield (Ender’s Game) is rumored to be the next actor to portray the webslinger.
Ant-Man is the next movie in the Marvel Cinematic Universe and the last of their second phase. Civil War will be released May 6, 2016.
