Marvel‘s rebooted high school age Peter Parker (aka Spider-Man), has to be one of the most anticipated casting decisions of the year, and Asa Butterfield (Ender’s Game, Hugo) appears to be the role’s main contender, according to Deadline sources.
Marvel figurehead Kevin Feige divulged in a recent interview that the new Spider-Man – the third incarnation within the 21st Century – would stand out from the rest as they were looking to cast a younger (or younger-looking) actor to portray the sprightly and awkward high school based Parker.
Up until this point, several names had been thrown around the internet and among fans in regard to the casting – two of which were actors on the rise Dylan O’Brien (The Maze Runner) and Ansel Elgort (Insurgent). If Butterfield’s “early talks” transition to the studio’s final choice, however, Feige and company seem to have made good on their true-to-age casting promise (Butterfield is 18, but could pass for any chosen high school grade).
The new Spider-Man has his own stand-alone film in the works with Marvel, but his first appearance will be in Captain America: Civil War which has recently begun filming. Therefore, the casting will likely be settled within a matter of weeks, if not sooner.
