Warner Bros. is fast-tracking a second spinoff of the 2014 hit The Lego Movie with Will Arnett set to reprise his voice-over role as Batman. According to The Hollywood Reporter, Lego Batman is being prepped to possibly take over the spot that was initially slated for sequel The Lego Movie 2 which had a hoped-for release date of May 26th, 2017. Arnett will once again provide the character’s distinctive voice and cool-guy attitude. Chris McKay, animation supervisor on the original Lego Movie, is attached to direct. It’s McKay’s first feature at the helm, but he brings with him a number of TV directing animation directing credits, including Titan Maximum and Robot Chicken.
McKay will direct from a script being written by screenwriter and author Seth Grahame-Smith. Grahame is best known for his screenplays for 2012’s Dark Shadows and Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter
The film is eyeing a release in 2017. In addition to Lego Batman and The Lego Movie 2, the ninja and samurai-themed Ninjago is currently in preproduction, with a scheduled release date of September 23, 2016.
