Zach Cregger has revealed that a prequel to his hit horror film Weapons, featuring its villain, is in talks, MovieWeb reports. Released on August 8th, Weapons follows several individuals in a small town who investigate when seventeen children from the same elementary school class mysteriously flee into the night and disappear. Critically praised, earning a 94% Fresh Rating on Rotten Tomatoes, and a box office hit, the film has so far grossed over $264 million worldwide.
Now, Cregger has announced that he is currently in talks with Warner Bros. and New Line Cinema about proceeding with a prequel that follows the character Aunt Gladys, played by Amy Madigan:
“It is real, and I’ve been talking to Warner Bros. about it. There’s a story, and I’m pretty excited about it. It’s not bullsh*t.”
The director had already conceived the idea while in production on Weapons, originally planning to incorporate a chapter that fleshed out the character’s backstory, before cutting it for time.
While the potential prequel has yet to be greenlit, it could be some time before Cregger would be able to work on it, however. He is currently in Prague, preparing a reboot of the Resident Evil series for Columbia Pictures, followed by a sci-fi film, Flood, for which he has already completed the screenplay.
When asked about her thoughts concerning the project, Madigan was receptive to the idea but wanted to wait until it was confirmed:
“…In this business, nothing’s real till it’s real. I just had such a great time working with Zach and being inside that brain of his…The other stuff has to do with all sorts of conversations that I would never be privy in and business things like that. But, you know, I love Gladys, so I’ll leave it at that.”
Along with Madigan, Weapons also stars Josh Brolin, Julia Garner, Alden Ehrenreich, Austin Abrams, Cary Christopher, Toby Huss, and Benedict Wong. It is currently still playing in theaters.
