Audiences awaiting the streaming release of Jesse Eisenberg’s A Real Pain are in luck. The Searchlight Pictures film will be available on Disney-owned Hulu beginning January 16th. The film has generated significant buzz, especially with Kieran Culkin’s recent Golden Globe win.
Written and directed by Eisenberg, A Real Pain explores the relationship between two estranged cousins who share the goal of honoring their late grandmother. The Jewish-American men embark on a journey to Poland to learn about her experience in the Holocaust.
In The Hollywood Reporter Writer Roundtable, Eisenberg described the story as autobiographical. The Academy Award-nominated actor expressed how he was inspired to set the screenplay in Poland after seeing a pop-up advertisement for Auschwitz tours. Eisenberg had a desire to capture “a strange thing that exists which is a yuppie tour of historical trauma.”
The film has received significant praise from both audiences and critics. In addition to Culkin’s win for supporting actor, the film was nominated for Best Picture, Best Actor, and Best Screenplay at the Golden Globes. Additionally, the film was named in AFI’s top 10 movies of the year alongside standout films such as The Brutalist, Anora, and Emilia Pérez.
A Real Pain currently has a 96% fresh on Rotten Tomatoes. The film is predicted to receive nominations for the Academy Awards taking place on March 2nd, 2025.
