‘The Little Mermaid’ Review: Disney Has Finally Found What Has Been Missing

It would be an understatement to say that Disney has had many of its live-action remakes fall flat. Aladdin, Beauty and the Beast, Mulan, and more have all been remade for the newer generations, but none have captured the magic and heart of their animated predecessors. From the latest songs to slightly awkward CGI, Disney’s stories are lackluster. However, this made the stakes very high for The Little Mermaid remake, especially after outcries from disgruntled folks who were irrationally outraged over Halle Bailey’s achievement of landing the lead role as Ariel. Who would’ve thought that a mermaid’s race would create an uproar when there are talking fish and mythical sea gods?

After multiple failed live-action films and a slew of racist online hate, Disney knew that this was not a film they could not afford to let the fans down. With much anticipation, the film is here, and finally, audiences can see for themselves if Disney or their nay-sayers will win.

The Little Mermaid is a triumph for Disney and its chapter of live-action films; of course, this is a children’s movie, leaving some room for adults to snicker here and there. Disney has learned from previous mistakes and carefully listened to the audience’s qualms and praises. The entertainment and media conglomerate took their time, and audiences will enjoy their classic fairytale from their childhood.

Rob Marshall once again proves himself a talented director with this one, creating the same magic as the original while using brand-new technology to renew it for the younger generations. Halley Bailey immediately cements her place amongst Disney royalty once her first song begins and leaves no room for anyone to criticize the choice to bring her into the Disney canon. Jonah Hauer-King gives Prince Eric a new image of sensitivity and courage, bringing his stage experience to the big screen. However, Melissa McCarthy stuns audiences as Ursula and shows side audiences have never seen of her.

Score: 3.5 out of 5

The Little Mermaid is a big attraction that will bring audiences of all ages to the theater. Disney has redeemed their live-action films thanks to Marshal and the All-Star cast; it is a film sure to surprise audiences. Despite being a kid’s movie overall, the film is charming and funny and will bring a sense of nostalgia to all who grew up singing the classic songs. If there is anything that urges you to get the family to the theater this year, it is this one. Disney knows it must renew itself with new technology and ideals; thankfully, The Little Mermaid hits the nail on the head with this one. Relax, sit back, and enjoy the magic that can return to the silver screen.
