Following the success of the 2022 subversive horror hit Barbarian, Zach Cregger has been announced to direct his second film. Weapons, developed for New Line Cinema, is eyeing a 2026 release. Now it’s been reported that Cregger has sealed a deal to write and direct a new Resident Evil adaptation, which is in the middle of a heavy bidding war between studios. The Hollywood Reporter says Warner Bros. and Netflix each have a stake in the battle.
Cregger’s Barbarian starred Georgina Campbell, Bill Skarsgård, and Justin Long and successfully mixed horror and comedic elements while keeping audiences on the edge of their seats. Starting his career as a comedian, Cregger made his mark in the horror sphere with this debut film feature, paving the way for his highly anticipated follow-up Weapons, which will star Julia Garner and Josh Brolin amidst an ensemble cast. As a highly revered fresh voice in horror, Cregger’s connection to a Resident Evil title means a big opportunity for potential distributors.
Resident Evil originated as a Capcom video game adventure series that mixed horror, sci-fi, and action elements. The film series has spawned seven entries to date, having grossed a combined sum of $1.2 billion worldwide. Constantin Films, which has held the film rights to Resident Evil since the late 1990s, will produce the new movie alongside PlayStation Productions. Cregger intends to amplify the horror elements the game series formulated in its early years.
