As promised on Super Bowl Sunday, audiences would be treated to another trailer for the upcoming sequel to Despicable Me‘s spin-off film, Minions. The first official trailer for the animated film has been released, this time being a more detailed and extended version of the Super Bowl ad from a few days prior. This sequel however, might be more of a Despicable Me prequel than a straightforward Minions sequel.
The trailer starts out with a young Gru in a waiting room with other thugs for an interview to be a part of an evil villain group. However, the villains were unimpressed with Gru’s attempt at becoming a villain due to his youth. In retaliation, Gru steals their valuable stone and, with the help of his faithful Minions, they go through an energetic chase across the city. The chase seems to be a success as they escaped from the villains’ wrath. That is, until they find out that one of the Minions named Auto traded the valuable stone for a Pet Rock toy, leaving Gru very frustrated.
Minions: Rise of Gru seems to have the same amount of animated chaos found the previous Minions film. The focus on child Gru, while hinted at the end of Minions seems to be riding off the recent success of young/baby versions of famous characters like Yoda and Mr. Peanut. Even if some might be tired of the Minons’ over saturation throughout the years, this is the first film from Illumination’s most popular franchise since 2017’s Despicable Me 3. Some fans might be looking forward to seeing Gru and his minions again, so it’s expected to be one of the more successful family films this summer.
Minions: Rise of Gru is set for release July 3rd, 2020. Watch the full trailer below:
