According to THR, Yahya Abdul-Mateen II is set to star opposite Jake Gyllenhaal as well as Eiza Gonzáles in the Michael Bay directed thriller Ambulance produced by Universal. The film is based on 2005 Dutch film entitled Ambulancen, which translates to the American title. Writer and director Laurits Munch-Petersen will get story credit for the original idea, as well as his co-writer Lars Andreas Pedersen. Though Chuck writer and producer Chris Fedak will be making his big screen leap with his adapted screenplay.
The original film is about two brothers that steal an ambulance. While it sounds like a Justin Rolland improvised idea, the film is a thriller that takes place in real time. After the duo realizes that other people are aboard the ambulance, the true story begins.
It is unknown how much is changed compared to the original story, so any number of characters could be added. This is Gyllenhaal’s second adaptation of a foreign script that took place in real time. He will be starring in The Guilty, whose cast has grown significantly over the last few months. It is clear that Fuqua and company are taking liberties with that film.
With Michael Bay directing as well as a TV writer as scribe, it will not be too surprising if the story attempts to go in a larger scale direction. The original Dutch film is not exactly beloved either, so plots, characters, and on could be tweaked with little complaint.
Abdul-Mateen II is one of the most engaging actors working in the industry. His roles in Aquaman, Watchmen, and The Trial of the Chicago Seven are just a few performances that show his range. Next he will star in The Candyman, which originally was slated for a September 2020 release date, now will be released in August 2021. Following this shoot, Abdul-Mateen II will head to Australia to star alongside Anya Taylor-Joy and Chris Hemsworth in the Mad Max Furiosa spinoff.
Ambulance is set to shoot early next year, with a late 2021 or early 2022 release.
