DC Studios has confirmed that Xolo Maridueña will reprise his role as Jaime Reyes, also known as Blue Beetle, in the upcoming Superman sequel, Man of Tomorrow. The film, written and directed by James Gunn, is currently in production in Atlanta and is scheduled to debut in theaters on July 9, 2027. This marks Maridueña’s first return to the character since headlining the 2023 standalone feature Blue Beetle.
The casting expands an already extensive ensemble for the superhero sequel. Maridueña joins lead actor David Corenswet, who returns as the Man of Steel, alongside Nicholas Hoult as Lex Luthor and Lars Eidinger, who is set to make his big-screen debut as the villainous Brainiac. The sequel’s narrative centers on a reluctant partnership between Superman and Luthor to confront the cosmic threat posed by Brainiac.
The supporting cast features a variety of returning and new DC Universe figures, including Rachel Brosnahan as Lois Lane, Skyler Gisondo as Jimmy Olsen, Sara Sampaio as Eve Teschmacher, and Milly Alcock as Supergirl. Additionally, the film integrates several members of the broader superhero roster, including Isabela Merced as Hawkgirl, Nathan Fillion as Green Lantern/Guy Gardner, Edi Gathegi as Mister Terrific, Adria Arjona as Maxima, and Aaron Pierre as Green Lantern/ John Stewart.
The inclusion of Blue Beetle aligns with earlier statements from Gunn, who designated Maridueña’s Jaime Reyes as the first official character of the newly established DCU. Beyond this live-action appearance, DC Studios and Warner Bros. Animation have been developing an animated series centered on the character with executive producer Miguel Puga, though updates on that project’s production timeline have remained quiet. Principal photography on Man of Tomorrow began in April and is scheduled to continue through the summer months.
