Video game adaptations have grown more popular over the last few years, with the success of Super Mario Bros and Last Of Us contributing massively to more positive outlook on them. And with this comes a new update on an adaptation of Bioshock, one of the most popular game series in recent years.
A movie based on Bioshock has been tossed around for years, with one even coming close to being produced. The potential project would have been helmed by director Gore Verbinski (Pirates of the Caribbean). A script was finished, casting was already in motion, and storyboards were complete. The movie was eventually scrapped due to its R-rating, with the consensus being it was too risky to make a big-budget video game movie rated R.
Now a BioShock film is on the horizon from Netflix, with director Francis Lawrence, known for his work on The Hunger Games, including the upcoming Ballad Of Songbirds And Snakes, with Michael Green working on the script.
“Netflix has been amazing about it. They were excited about it before the strike, they’re excited about it now, post-strike,” Green said in a recent interview with Collider. “Yes, I got called, the, ‘How’s it coming along?’ the minute the strike was over, ‘You about ready…?’ Been meeting regularly with Francis Lawrence and his team to refine a draft to go back in. We’re all optimistic. We all love it. It’s a great big sprawling nightmare world we wanna see real. So, here’s hoping. I would love to have an update for you soon.”
