‘Wonka’ Rings In The New Year While Box Office Totals For 2023 Crack $9 Billion

The curtains have been called on 2023, and Wonka garners in the new year for many audiences as it maintains its lead over the holiday. As well as Wonka’s imaginative success, comes the global box office breaking $9 billion, after predictions were shaky that it would.

Wonka is unwrapping $29.5 million for the four-day holiday weekend, pushing it to $140.2 million domestically. Overseas, it garnered nearly $40 million, giving it a global total of $384.6 million.

Along with Wonka is the fellow musical The Color Purple, making $14.9 million across the holiday weekend, landing it at number 4 on the New Year’s Chart. With Oprah Winfrey and Steven Spielberg both serving as producers, The Color Purple, as well as Wonka, have been able to succeed where musicals released in the last few years have failed.

While the first Aquaman was a bonafide success, its follow-up isn’t fairing nearly as well. As Hollywood Reporter points out, Aquaman And The Lost Kingdom has been able to stay afloat on the chart for the weekend, the general gross is coming up short of that of its predecessor, with a weekend gross of $23.5 million.

The change in tides for superhero interest is one that this year will be remembered for. Looking back at previous releases, The Marvels stood as the biggest misstep in the history of the MCU, financially speaking. Audiences instead turned to subjects and genres that couldn’t keep up with superhero flicks in their prime.

The box office juggernaut of the year was the global phenomenon Barbenheimer. The moniker coined by the internet came from merging the titles of Greta Gerwig’s Barbie and Christopher Nolan’s Oppenheimer. Both were released on the same day, and the revenue of July and August were able to climb to that of pre-pandemic numbers thanks to both of those films. Both flicks were polar opposite in their tone, but both were original concepts for the big screen, connecting to no previous films, and not serving as a sequel, reboot, or anything of that nature.

2023 as a whole was able to cement itself as the best yearly showing since 2019. Hollywood Reporter stated that revenue in the US and Canada was up 20% over that of 2022, which finished up with $7.5 billion. However, ticket sales are still down, with the $9.03 to $9.05 billion estimates from Comscore not quite reaching the $11.4 billion 2019 had.

Other hits were Sound Of Freedom with $184.1 domestically, Taylor Swift: The Eras Tour with $179.6 domestically, and Super Mario Bros., which broke $1 billion globally.
