‘Wonder Woman’ Sequel gets a December 2019 Release Date

Arguably one of the biggest surprises of 2017, Wonder Woman was a breath of fresh air for critics, audience and DC fans who had all but lost faith in the DCEU’s direction. It was fun, inspiring, action-packed and expanded upon Gal Gadot’s brief, but memorable, performance in Batman v. Superman. She embodied the strength, confidence and selflessness that not only makes Wonder Woman one of the most iconic superheroes, but provides a genuine role model for younger audiences. Thus, for the first time in a while, fans are actually excited to see a DC movie sequel.

Now Warner Bros. has finally unveiled the date upon which that sequel will arrive. Despite WB/DC unveiling their upcoming line-up last week at San Diego Comic-Con, including Gadot’s performance in Justice League, Wonder Woman 2 was not mentioned in detail. However, a report today has confirmed that the Amazon princess/warrior’s next cinematic outing will be on December 13, 2019, a date that the studio recently set for an untitled “WB event film.” Based on a script written by Patty Jenkins and Geoff Johns, the sequel will presumably follow Wonder Woman in the 1980’s during the Cold War.

Naturally, Gal Gadot is expected to return for Wonder Woman 2, but a director for the project has yet to be confirmed. This sadly leaves Patty Jenkins’ role in the sequel, apart from screenwriter, rather ambiguous. There are also rumors that Chris Pine might return as Steve Trevor, even though such an idea defies two specific factors: the 75+ year time gap between films, and the fact that Trevor sacrificed himself to protect WW in the first movie. I doubt that Jenkins and Johns will pull a trick from the Lynda Carter show and have Diana work alongside one of Trevor’s descendants, but we will just have to see what they come up with.
