The highly anticipated sequel to the 2017 hit Wonder Woman sadly won’t be coming out this summer as intended. Warner Bros. Studios has announced that Wonder Woman 1984 will be arriving on October 2nd, rather than August 14th as the studio had hoped. The new release date is set for nearly a year after the film’s original release date, November of 2019.
This change is due to a ripple effect of coronavirus pushing back release dates since as early as March. Tenet, directed by Christopher Nolan, also announced that it’s delaying its release today. Up until now, studios executives have been optimistic about the expedient re-opening of movie theaters in America after they closed their doors to prevent the spread of COVID-19, but as cases are back on the rise after the country’s re-opening, it seems studios are facing the reality that business as usual may have to wait for a while longer.
Wonder Woman 1984 sees the return of Gal Gadot as Diana Prince, a.k.a. Wonder Woman, the Amazonian warrior who left her secluded island home to live among humanity and act as its protector. Also returning is Chris Pine as Diana’s love interest, Steve Trevor, who seemingly died at the end of the first Wonder Woman. Like the first film, Wonder Woman 1984 is directed by Patty Jenkins. Wonder Woman 1984 will serve as the ninth movie in the DC Extended Universe lineup, following Birds of Prey.
