Will and Jada Smith Family Foundation To Shut Down After Oscars Slap Controversy

Will Smith and Jada Pinkett Smith have had a tumultuous past few years in the public eye. An infamous viral altercation at the 2022 Oscars where Will Smith slapped Chris Rock after he made joke about Jada Pinkett Smith’s alopecia still haunts both of them to this day. Two years later, their charity, the Will and Jada Smith Family Foundation, had to shutter in the wake of the slap, according to Variety

Over only one year, the organization faced an 83% revenue drop, going from raking in about $2,138,660 in 2021 to only $365,870 in 2022. Additionally, major donors like American Airlines and CAA dropped support after the slap. According to a source that spoke to Variety, the couple were already “winding down” the foundation before the 2022 incident.

Variety discovered that the foundation had donated to some small organizations, like Rebecoming Inc., in 2022. Variety found a number of suspicious details in this donation. A source close to the organization said the donation was made at another celebrity event, but Variety was unable to confirm or deny that claim.

Variety also discovered odd expenditures including a $3,304 expense in “bank overdrawn” fees. As of 2022, the organization had no paid staff after slashing pay and staffing in 2021. The foundation’s website is still running.
