According to Deadline, Whalefall has released an official trailer. The film is a movie adaptation of the novel written by Daniel Kraus (The Shape of Water, The Living Dead). The film will be premiering on October 16, 2026.
The trailer opens with the ocean and a father and son in his newborn stage bonding as the father states, “I could teach you things. I’ll give you all the tools.” There is a significant time jump where both men go on a trip to the ocean in scuba gear. The son is later taken captive by a whale despite an attempt to flee. Watch the trailer below:
The drama thriller stars Austin Abrams (Euphoria, Weapons), Emily Rudd (One Piece, Fear Street Part One: 1994), Josh Brolin (Avengers: Infinity War, Wake Up Dead Man: A Knives Out Mystery), Elisabeth Shue (The Karate Kid, Back to the Future), John Ortiz (Fast & Furious, Going in Style) and Jane Levy (Shameless, A Little Prayer). Brian Duffield (Love and Monsters, The Babysitter) directs. Duffield and Kraus co-wrote the screenplay.
The official logline of Whalefall is as follows: “a scuba diver who, while looking for his father’s remains, is swallowed by an 80-foot, 60-ton sperm whale and has just one hour to get out before his oxygen runs out.”
Duffield felt drawn to the novel and claimed he wanted rights after “sliding into Kraus’ DMs. Duffield explained, “I’d never talked to him before, and then he was like, ‘It’s not done.’ And I was like, ‘Well, as soon as it’s done, send it to me.’ And then for some reason, he did, and that was before [No One Will Save You] had even come out, so I only had a very small indie movie to my name at the at the moment. I read the book. Didn’t know anything about the father son stuff in it. I remember reading it as soon as he sent me, I was like, ‘I got to read this tonight to make him know that I’m serious,’ and also to see if it was good and it was f–king amazing.”
