‘West Side Story’ Trailer Debuts During the Oscars

Oscars night typically comes with some surprises and sneak peeks at new films, and this year is no exception. The first trailer for 20th Century Studios and Amblin’s Steven Spielberg directed remake of the hit musical West Side Story has been released, giving us the first official look at the film which was supposed to release during the 2020 holiday season. The film will be Spielberg’s first feature-length live-action musical.

The original film based on the musical released six decades ago and has remained one of the most beloved and appreciated musical films of all time. Spielberg’s new version stars Ansel Elgort as Tony and Rachel Zegler as Maria.

The sneak peek begins with shots of the city and echoing whistles, showing off slick visuals, a few of the bigger dance numbers, and finishing with a rendition of the song “Somewhere” from the original musical. The story follows a forbidden love caught between the rivalry of two teenage street gangs of different ethnic groups.

Fans of musicals and Spielberg’s work alike should have a lot to enjoy with the upcoming film. West Side Story is set to release later this year on December 10.
