Welcome to the Weekly Trailer Roundup, where we count down the top five trailers released in the past week, “top” being defined any way we want to at the moment…exciting, ridiculous, best, worst…
These are the trailers that, for one reason or another, you should be paying attention to.
After a few weeks that were a little down, we’re back to a very strong countdown this week. The irony was it wasn’t a particularly difficult week to choose, but we found the cream of the crop pretty creamy. Here it is.
#5 – Mr. Peabody & Sherman Theatrical Trailer
The plot is a little familiar, and once you figure out who Mr. Peabody’s voice is, it might just ruin the character (no, I’m not going to tell you), but there’s genuine humor and charm in effect here, and it’s coming from an animation studio at Dreamworks with an increasingly impressive pedigree.
#4 – Hours Theatrical Trailer 2
Paul Walker’s been accused of being pretty wooden in the Fast and the Furious series, and it’s not an allegation we’ll argue. Neither is it one he completely escapes in the trailer to this Hurricane Katrina story that seems to veer a little too far into action territory at times, but it’s also a story that pulls at your heartstrings and may be worth keeping one eye on.
#3 – Anchorman 2: The Legend Continues Theatrical Trailer 2
Let’s be clear: this is undoubtedly more Anchorman. The good news is looks like more good Anchorman, not some bastardized, cash grabbing sequel (although we’ll not totally let it off the hook for that just yet). Like most comedies, the hope is that the trailer is just a taste of the funny, not all the punchlines.
#2 – Captain America: The Winter Soldier
We spent some time discussing this trailer yesterday, and the long and short of it is that while there are some things in this trailer which give us pause, there’s also a whole lot to like. We applaud the ambition.
#1 – Tie – Neighbors Theatrical Trailer 2 and That Awkward Moment Theatrical Trailer
Remember when Zac Efron was this guy? Well if you do, he’s working hard to make you forget with a pair of R-rated comedies inbound. Previous trailers for Neighbors and That Awkward Moment have appeared on our countdown before, but with some quality new footage from a second full length Neighbors trailer and a non-red band That Awkward Moment trailer, there’s plenty of reason to hope both of these comedies turn out very well.
