Sony’s Uncharted wins big this weekend at the domestic box office, where it’s projected to earn $51 million over the long President’s Day weekend. Directed by Ruben Fleischer, the video game adaptation stars Tom Holland, who stars in another box office hit currently in theaters, Spider-Man: No Way Home, alongside Mark Wahlberg.
Set as an origin story for the video game, Holland plays a young Nathan Drake, working as a bartender before his globetrotting adventures. He is recruited by Wahlberg’s seasoned treasure hunter Victor “Sully” Sullivan, to recover a fortune amassed by Ferdinand Magellan and lost 500 years ago. What starts as a heist job quickly evolves into a globetrotting, white-knuckle race to reach the prize before the ruthless Santiago Moncada (Antonio Banderas), who believes he and his family are the rightful heirs.
“Tom Holland and Mark Wahlberg are brilliant together. Thank you to our sister company, PlayStation, for their incredible partnership, and all the many people who worked so hard to bring this film to life in a big, theatrical way,” Sony Motion Picture Group president Josh Greenstein said in a statement.
The film grossed $55.4 million overseas. That’s without any help from China, as it will open there on March 14.
The Channing Tatum starred, and co-directed Dog also opened ahead of expectations, grossing $18.1 million for the long holiday weekend.
The film follows Army Ranger Jackson Briggs, who accepts an assignment to drive Lulu, an Army dog who served in Afghanistan, some 1,500 miles in his lovingly restored ’84 Bronco so the canine, herself traumatized by her wartime experiences, can attend the funeral of her late handler, all in the hopes to get back in the good graces of his commanding officer.
Finally, in its tenth weekend, Spider-Man: No Way Home grossed $8.8 million for a domestic total of $771 million.
