Modern horror auteur Zach Cregger might scare audiences back into the world of Weapons. Following the massive success and acclaim of the Warner Bros.-distributed film, talks have been held about exploring a prequel to the film’s events. The narrative structure of Weapons, Cregger’s sophomore effort following 2022’s Barbarian, is chapter-based, with each principal character getting the chance to lead the story. Well, all except one. The film’s antagonist, who has already made a name for herself in the horror sphere, is Aunt Gladys. While Gladys’ involvement in the movie’s central mystery drives home the end of the story, it does so without the command of a chapter all to herself. Instead, the events are held through the eyes of her “nephew” Alex, the only child in Ms. Gandy’s class to not go missing late one night. Now, The Hollywood Reporter reveals that Cregger and Warner Bros. are potentially willing to go in-depth on Glady’s backstory, with a prequel being debated for release. Gladys’ chapter was originally included in the first edit of Weapons, but was unfortunately cut for time.
The discussion is only verbal as of now, with no deals or timeline on the film’s production slated yet. Besides, Cregger is already hard at work on his next film, a Resident Evil adaptation meant to be divorced from any previous IP’s continuity, though Cregger promises to do the source material justice. Weapons breakout star Austin Abrams is scheduled to lead the film in 2026. The horror director has other projects on his radar as well, including a Sci-Fi screenplay and a Batman-adjacent feature set in the DC Universe that he’s yet to pitch. Whatever Cregger’s next project may be, it will more than likely be distributed at Warner Bros. Pictures.
Weapons opened to a $43 million domestic sum on its first weekend. This rivaled its original projection by $10 million and is held against its $38 million production budget. The event horror film is now playing in theaters.
