Ever more layers of the DC Comics canon are continuing to be explored for screen adaptations over at Warner Bros. as news has broken that director Doug Liman (Edge of Tomorrow) has been tapped to helm Justice League Dark. This particularly set of news, broken first over at Variety, comes the very same day it was revealed that Liman had departed the Marvel/Fox’s Gambit, a Channing Tatum-starrer that’s been delayed various times over the course of the last year. It appears he may be jumping ship to DC.
Justice League Dark would be set around a darker subset of DC Comics characters consisting of John Constantine, Swamp Thing, Deadman, Zatanna and Etrigan the Demon. While plot specifics are currently being kept under lock and key, the project would likely play into the events already played out in the DC Cinematic Universe (Man of Steel, Batman v Superman, Suicide Squad). Michael Gilio is penning the screenplay while Scott Rudin will produce. The project has been circling Warner Bros. for several years now with the original intention being that Guillermo del Toro (Crimson Peak) would direct – he is no longer seemingly attached in any capacity.
Of the characters that would make up Justice League Dark, John Constantine has already been the source of a film previously in the form of the 2005 Keanu Reeves-starrer Constantine; Swamp Thing was also the subject of the 1982 movie directed by late Wes Craven.
It’s unclear as of now on when Justice League Dark might go under the cameras or when the project may makes its way to theaters, as well as potential casting. Liman, whose last film to hit theaters was the 2014 Tom Cruise-Emily Blunt hit Edge of Tomorrow, recently wrapped the sniper drama The Wall for Amazon Studios and is currently in post-production on another Cruise vehicle American Made, due out in theaters in September of next year.
