Universal has released a trailer for The Visit, the newest movie from writer/director M. Night Shyamalan (The Sixth Sense). The found footage horror movie follows brother and sister (Olivia DeJonge and Ed Oxenbould) who stay over at their grandparents’ house while their mother – played by Kathryn Hahn (Step Brothers) – goes away on a cruise. On their first night there, they start to discover some terrifying secrets about their mother’s parents.
The trailer starts off in a lighthearted mood with Buddy Holly’s “Everyday,” and the inclusion of Kathryn Hahn, who is traditionally in comedies. However, things quickly turn as the trailer continues.
The movie is the first directorial effort from Shyamalan since the 2013 bomb After Earth. It’s also his first horror movie since 2008’s The Happening. This is Shyamalan’s first collaboration with production company Blumhouse Productions, which specializes in low-budget horror movies like the Paranormal Activity series.
Shyamalan is in desperate need of a hit. His last commercial success was 2004’s The Village, though for many, that film marked the start of the decline in the quality of the director’s work. He’s likely hoping the low-budget nature of the film will make it profitable.
The Visit is scheduled to hit theaters on September 11. Check out the trailer below.
