So, they made a new Robin Hood movie. I know, I know. We didn’t really ask for one. The director (Otto Bathurst) has mainly worked on TV shows (Peaky Blinders and Black Mirror, among others). It stars a couple of pretty boys (Taron Egerton and Jamie Dornan). And yes, it looks like it may have originated as a stand-alone movie for Legolas from Lord of the Rings. But you know what? It looks pretty damn entertaining, so I’m going to give it the benefit of the doubt for now.
In case you had any doubts, this is still the story of Robin of Loxley (Egerton). In this version, Little John (Jamie Foxx) is his Moorish commander, and together they lead a group of Merry Men (including Dornan as Will Scarlet) against the corrupt Sheriff of Nottingham (Ben Mendelsohn). Money will be stolen from the rich, wealth will be redistributed to the poor, slow-motion arrow-time action sequences will be plentiful, and a little romance will be thrown in just to see if it sticks. And it looks like Robin will be pulling double duty as an aristocrat who publicly denounces his alter-ego.
Robin Hood also stars Eve Hewson as Maid Marian, and Tim Minchin as Friar Tuck.
