Watch the Full Trailer for the Sequel to ‘Sicario’

SICARIO Day 13

I’ve seen a lot of hate online for Sicario: Day of the Soldado. Perhaps that shouldn’t be surprising, as everything is hated on the internet, but this one is intriguing to me. So you’ve got what is widely considered to be great movie (Sicario), with a badass character who everyone loves (Alejandro Gillick, played by Benicio Del Toro), and maybe the one criticism that can be leveled at the movie is that the badass character doesn’t get to do enough badass things.

Enter Sicario: Day of the Soldado. Focusing on Del Toro’s badass-ness, this sequel looks to ratchet up the intensity considerably. If Sicario was all about building tension, Soldado seems to be the release. Written by Taylor Sheridan (scribe of the first film, Hell or High Water, and Wind River), the plot revolves around federal agent Matt Graver’s (Josh Brolin) plan to escalate the drug war between the Mexican cartels. After taking the daughter of a cartel kingpin hostage, the girl’s involvement makes Graver and Gillick question what they are fighting for.

The movie also stars Isabela Moner, Jeffrey Donovan, Manuel Garcia-Rulfo, and Catherine Keener.

Is it an unnecessary sequel? Is it taking a cerebral slow-burn of a film and taking it into action-movie territory? Will the lack of Denis Villeneuve and Emily Blunt negatively impact your enjoyment? Watch the trailer below, and then decide for yourself when Sicario: Day of the Soldado hits theaters on June 29th:

Christopher Aanerud: I graduated from the University of Georgia with an English degree. I enjoy watching movies and TV shows, playing video games, singing badly to pop songs in the car, eating delicious food, and drinking fine alcoholic beverages. I play basketball when my crippling knee and back pain allows, and I try to hit the gym on a regular basis. I have a son and a sugar glider, and when I'm not combing the internet for breaking news I am likely traveling or riding my Razor scooter.
