Fox Searchlight has released the full trailer for the fourth adaptation of Thomas Hardy’s 1874 romance novel. This film stars Carey Mulligan (An Education), Juno Temple (Maleficent), Michael Sheen (Frost/Nixon), Tom Sturridge (Pirate Radio), and Matthias Schoenaerts (The Drop) and is directed by Thomas Vinterberg (The Hunt).
The new trailer expands Far From the Madding Crowd‘s plot from what was revealed in the teaser trailer. The movie is set in Victorian England, and follows Bathsheba Everdene (Mulligan) a stubborn heiress who inherits her family’s estate in the country. As she rises into social prominence, she is pursued buy three suitors: her estate’s sheep farmer (Schoenaerts), a young sergeant (Sturridge), and a wealthy, older bachelor (Sheen).
This is the first movie for Vinterberg, fresh off his 2012 Foreign Language Oscar nomination for The Hunt. While the director’s never done a period piece before, Mulligan has been in a number of them – including Joe Wright’s 2005 adaptation of Pride & Prejudice, An Education, and The Great Gatsby. This is however, Mulligan’s first movie set in the 18th Century. Sheen, Schoenaerts and Sturridge are new to films set in the period, though Schoenaerts will be seen in A Little Chaos later this year and The Danish Girl in 2016.
