Saoirse Ronan‘s follow-up to her Oscar-nominated role in Lady Bird is almost here. The actress stars in On Chesil Beach, an adaptation of an Ian McEwan novel, that has been adapted by McEwan and directed by Dominic Cooke (TV’s The Hollow Crown) as his feature film debut. The film is somewhat of a callback to Ronan’s first Oscar-nomination for Atonement, which was also a period piece adapted from a McEwan novel.
On Chesil Beach follows a young couple on their honeymoon night, as the realities of their differing backgrounds, their idyllic courtship, and pressured feelings surrounding sexual intimacy come to play in one fateful weekend.
Billy Howle (Dunkirk) co-stars with Ronan. Also in the cast are Emily Watson (Breaking the Waves), Samuel West (Darkest Hour), Anne-Marie Duff (Suffragette), and Adrian Scarborough (Gosford Park).
On Chesil Beach hits theaters on May 18. Watch the film’s first trailer below, which features a sweeping têt-à-têt between husband and wife and the world trying to pull them apart.
