It’s been 50 years since Stanley Kubrick’s 1971 masterwork A Clockwork Orange debuted to the world, and cinema and culture, in many ways changed. Kubrick is a name many know, even those disinterested in film, but you’re reading this film news article on this lovely pop culture website so of course, you have interest in the man responsible for 2001: A Space Odyssey, Barry Lyndon, The Shining, Full Metal Jacket, Eyes Wide Shut, millions of folks picking up a camera, and this recently turned 50-year-old movie based on the controversial novel of the same name by Anthony Burgess.
Starring Malcolm McDowell in an iconic performance as Alex DeLarge (the Academy Awards didn’t seem to think so. At least the Golden Globes did), the film has become a cult classic and is considered one of the greatest films of all time, despite its extremely controversial release. A trailer has been released for the film’s digital and Blu-ray release, featuring highlights of the film in glorious Ultra HD (a bit of the old ultra-violence). The story is of Alex and his journey towards redemption through experimental therapy and techniques, after committing acts of violent crimes with his gang (droogs he calls them).
Despite McDowell getting snubbed of a Best Actor nomination, the film was nominated for 4 Oscars including three for Kubrick for writing, directing, and producing. His storytelling methods through camera movements and framing as well as his overall filming style have made him an inspiration for generations of filmmakers. The 4K version of A Clockwork Orange will be available to fans on September 21st.
