Warner Bros just made their film Just Mercy available for free for the entire month of June in support of Blackout Tuesday. The Destin Daniel Cretton-directed film tells the real-life story of civil rights defense attorney Brian Stevenson (Michael B. Jordan) and his fight to free wrongly convicted death row inmates. Stevenson’s story remains inspiring as he fights for what is right in the face of a criminal justice system designed to oppress and incarcerate black men and women.
Warner Bros released a statement on their social media accounts stating, “We believe in the power of story. Our film Just Mercy, based on the life work of civil rights attorney Bryan Stevenson, is one resource we can humbly offer to those who are interested in learning more about the systemic racism that plagues our society. To actively be part of the change our country is so desperately seeking, we encourage you to learn more about our past and the countless injustices that have led us to where we are today. Their announcement comes in the wake of George Floyd’s death at the hands of the Minneapplois Police Department, which sparked worldwide outrage about the impunity of police brutality in America. Just Mercy can now be streamed on all digital platforms.
