Warner Bros. Discovery has made the shocking decision to cancel the $90 million Batgirl project, and will not appear on HBO Max, it’s been announced. The film was to feature “In the Heights” star Leslie Grace as Barbara Gordon. Originally, Batgirl was to be an HBO Max release, but then was considered for theatrical distribution. The budget shot to $90 million after COVID shutdowns.
“The decision to not release Batgirl reflects our leadership’s strategic shift as it relates to the DC universe and HBO Max. Leslie Grace is an incredibly talented actor and this decision is not a reflection of her performance. We are incredibly grateful to the filmmakers of Batgirl and Scoob! Holiday Haunt and their respective casts and we hope to collaborate with everyone again in the near future,” according to Warner Bros. Picture Spokesperson.
Committed to making DC titles theatrical event films, CEO David Zaslav and management agreed Batgirl did not have what it took to become such an event. However, insiders have emphasized the studio’s love for the film’s directors (Adil El Arbi and Bilall Fallah (“Bad Boys for Life”), and stars and hopes to work with them in the near future.
According to the Hollywood Reporter, “Warners has also decided to shelve animated feature Scoob!: Holiday Haunt which had a budget in the $40 million range.”
