In the wake of the recent $43 million merger of WarnerMedia and Discovery, rumors are swirling over Warner Bros. Discovery considering an overhaul of DC Entertainment. Variety reported this today, claiming multiple sources have come forward to corroborate the information.
David Zaslav, the newly appointed CEO of Warner Bros. Discovery, and other leadership in the company have been weighing their options relating to handling the DC franchise. It’s no secret that DC Entertainment and the films the studio has released have been met with mixed reception (Wonder Woman 1984, Justice League, Suicide Squad). It might benefit them to wipe the slate clean and start with new leadership and a new direction.
DC Entertainment’s film slate is commonly compared to Disney’s Marvel Cinematic Universe, arguably one of the most popular franchises coming out today. Headed by Kevin Feige, the MCU is a collaborative and cohesive project that works because of its leadership and vision. Zaslav has been rumored to be vetting leadership to take on the DC mantle, but with nothing concrete yet.
Although not all of DC’s films have gone well, a fair share has. Matt Reeves’ The Batman was released with flying colors and a total gross of $360 million at domestic box offices. James Gunn’s Peacemaker series on HBO Max has also been received well, a spin-off of his 2021 film The Suicide Squad (not to be confused with the messy Suicide Squad, David Ayer’s 2016 film). This new uptick in DC’s success might signal a good direction for the studio as a whole, and Zaslav is sure to make some changes in his new leadership position.
Upcoming DC films include Black Adam, DC League of Super-Pets, Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom, and The Flash.
