Warner Bros announced today several release dates for new films. This included films coming out next year, but also dates on some anticipated movies in early pre-production. The three films in question are Furiosa, Coyote vs. Acme, and The Color Purple, all slated for 2023 release dates.
Furiosa is set for a June 23, 2023 and is the latest film in the Mad Max Franchise, though this will be the first to follow someone either than Max Rockatansky, though Fury Road’s standout was clearly Charlize Theron as Furiosa. The prequel follows a younger Furiosa played by Queen’s Gambit breakout Anya Taylor-Joy. Chris Hemsworth and Yahya Abdul-Mateen II are also attached with George Miller directing and writing.
Coyote vs. Acme is a live-action/animated hybrid film following the Looney Toons character Wile E. Coyote, which is set for a July 21, 2023 release date. The film is based on a concept turned book by Ian Frazier of the same name. The film is directed by Dave Green, with a script penned by James Gunn, Jeremy Slater, Jon Silberman, Josh Silberman and Samy Burch.
Lastly, The Color Purple will be coming out on December 20, 2023. This is somewhat of a remake of the 1985 film, though it will be a musical in the vein of the 2004 Broadway production. All of these are based on the original 1982 novel by Alice Walker. Blitz Bazawule is on board to direct, while Oprah Winfrey, the star of the original, Steven Spielberg, Scott Sanders and Quincy Jones are all producers on the project.
Warner Bros, after facing controversy from many in the industry are not slowing down announcements anytime soon and seem keen to show directors and producers that they’re still willing to put films out in theaters. Though, two years in advanced might be a little much, it seems to be the new norm. And the way release dates for big blockbusters go, maybe it is best to announce a slate as soon as possible.
