‘War for the Planet of the Apes’ Looks Darker Than Ever in Official Trailer

20th Century Fox released the official trailer for War for the Planet of the Apes on Friday. The third installment in the rebooted franchise stars motion capture king Andy Serkis (The Lord of the Rings), as well as Woody Harrelson (The Hunger Games), Steve Zahn (Sahara), and Judy Greer (The Descendants).

The plot for the latest Planet of the Apes film is quite simple: Caesar, the leader of the apes, and a blood thirsty colonel (Harrelson) engage in a violent war to overtake each other’s species and control the planet. As the trailer nicely depicts, this film will also be a psychological and ideological battle between the apes and the humans, and will explore the darker sides of human nature and animal instinct.

The official trailer is a two-parter, with the first half being Caesar’s call to arms and the second being the colonel’s, both done through intense and forceful voice-overs. Directed by Matt Reeves (Cloverfield), War for the Planet of the Apes will hit theaters July 14, 2017.
