There is a new and unusual champion setting records for the box office during these pandemic times. Venom: Let There Be Carnage jumped up to $90.1 million on its debut, thus setting a new high for release weekends in 2021.
Tom Hardy and his slimy symbiote seem to have found the formula to beat other superhero movies as can be seen with this past weekend’s box office success. Venom: Let There Be Carnage, with $90 million on its opening weekend, has topped this year’s previously highest-grossing movie Black Widow, which had generated $80 million back in July. Marvel’s Shang-Chi and The Legend of the Ten Rings had produced $75 million and has thus fallen to third place in the 2021 top debut weekend list.
Venom: Let There Be Carnage is looking at other high-grossing movies of 2021 from the rearview mirror such as Universal Picture’s F9 that had grossed $70 million on its release weekend. Sony Chairman has said the following after seeing the excellent results of the movie: “With apologies to Mr. Twain: The death of movies has been greatly exaggerated.”
The film follows its predecessor setting a much darker and quirkier tone than Disney’s Marvel Cinematic Universe, which might be more appealing to young and middle-aged males. A possible explanation for its huge success over the weekend can be explained in its demography. 62% of ticket buyers were male and 55% were under 25 years old. Franchise Entertainment Research spokesperson David A Groos made the following statement to Variety: “Young adult audiences are less deterred by current pandemic conditions than older and family moviegoers, which is benefitting superhero, action, and horror movies.”
The fact that Venom 2 has sold more cinema tickets than its predecessor on its inauguration weekend is nothing short of astonishing, considering the first movie had come out in the pre-covid times.
It has absolutely devoured its competition, at least for the time being. The next James Bond film, No Time To Die, is coming out in the USA next Friday and has already had an astoundingly strong release weekend internationally. Not to mention other long-awaited films such as Dune, The Matrix 4 and Spider-man No Way Home are looming on the horizon as we come closer to the end of the year.
