Director Shawn Levy (The Pink Panther, Night at the Museum) has given an update on the long-awaited film Uncharted, which is based on the Uncharted video games with Nathan Drake being the main character.
It is easy to compare Nathan Drake with Indiana Jones as both characters are gentlemen who adventure into remote areas to find antiques and ancient artifacts. Levy considers Drake to be the new Indiana Jones of our generation.
The first Uncharted game, Uncharted: Drake’s Fortune, was released in 2007, and soon after, there were attempts to adapt the game into a movie. David O. Russell once tried to direct the movie and wanted to cast Mark Wahlberg as Drake in 2009, but the film never came to fruition. Now Levy has taken on the project of creating an Uncharted movie and has cast Tom Holland as Drake.
Although Levy is working on other projects including Starman, he is prioritizing Uncharted. Levy commented the following about the video game-turned-film:
“I mean, as of right now, the closest to the starting line is Uncharted in that it’s a massive title. We now have a very good script and we have our star in Tom Holland. That is now subject to schedule and additional casting. But I would say as of right now, that seems to be the most near horizon. And it’s a movie I’m very excited about.”
Video-game-adapted movies are always questionable since they are not usually praised by the film critics and they don’t have strong box-office performances. Although many directors believe that they could break the spell and produce a “successful” video-game-adapted film, they often cannot keep their promises. Uncharted could be a potential success considering Indiana Jones 5’s release date is continually delayed and there are not any adventure films on the big screen.
