Portuguese director, Nuno Beato, will be pitching his new project, My Grandfather Used to Say He Saw Demons, at Cartoon Movie, a European animated feature forum, according to Variety. The project will focus on a designer, Rosa, and the relationship she had with her grandfather. She develops regret after his death since she feels she did not reciprocate the love he showed to her. Through letters and various clues, she tries to arrive at a peaceful conclusion to this situation and sets out to rebuild his house and restore the surrounding land to better conditions. Painted figures appear along the way to guide her in her efforts in a similar way that her grandfather would have done.
The film will combine 2D animation and stop-motion techniques which help to emphasize the contrasting plot lines in the movie. While Rosa is carrying out her daily duties as a designer, viewers will see 2D animation. Stop motion techniques soon appear once she returns to her family home in Portugal. Sardinha em Lata, the producer of the film, was founded 11 years ago. While the company has produced TV series and short films, My Grandfather will be the producing company’s first debut feature.
The film also incorporates aspects of Portuguese culture. The featured village draws on ones located in northern Portugal. The demons depicted in the film are inspired by traditional craft art. Cartoon Movie is in progress from March 5-7.
