The success of the Marvel Cinematic Universe has certainly inspired other studios to attempt their own cinematic universes, but unfortunately no studio has been as successful as Marvel/Disney. Warner Bros is still tweaking its DC cinematic universe, and it seems like Universal has given up on their plans for the Dark Universe. This failed franchise was supposed to contain movies based on the classic Universal monsters like Dracula, Wolfman, Frankenstein and the Invisible Man. However the movie meant to kick off this cinematic universe, 2017’s Tom Cruise-led The Mummy, ended up being a colossal failure and caused Universal to scrap all sequel plans.
After the Dark Universe was canceled, Universal decided to make stand alone movies based on their monsters, like The Invisible Man which will star Elisabeth Moss and come out this month. However, both Variety and Screen Rant have reported that Universal will also be remaking Bride of Frankenstein.
When Universal was planning on remaking Bride of Frankenstein for the Dark Universe, big names like Angelina Jolie and Javier Bardem were attached to the project alongside director Bill Condon, but it’s unknown if they are still are involved. Currently producer Amy Pascal is attached to the project. Pascal was the producer for the 2016 reboot of Ghostbusters, Spider-Man: Homecoming, and Greta Gerwig’s adaptation of Little Women.
