Troy Kotsur capped up his awards season by winning the most coveted prize of all: an Academy Award.
The CODA star became the second deaf performer and the first deaf male actor to win an Oscar for acting. Marlee Matlin, who co-starred in CODA, is the first deaf Oscar winner.
Kotsur received Best Supporting Actor for his portrayal of a deaf father to an adolescent daughter (Emilia Jones) attempting to begin her singing career. While Ruby’s life revolves around her parents, played by Matlin and Kotsur, and working on their fishing boat with her brother (Daniel Durant), she aspires to join a prominent music school.
It is worth noting that CODA stands for Child of Deaf Adults.
