After the scandal surrounding director Bryan Singer came to light, Millennium Films decided to shelve the Red Sonja movie that Singer was signed on to direct. However, it seems like Millennium Films has decided to go back on their decision because according to Deadline, Jill Soloway has just been hired to write and direct the new Red Sonja movie.
Soloway is known for creating the award-winning series Transparent, which follows the life of father transitioning into womanhood as well as the tumultuous lives of her family members. Unfortunately Transparent became the subject of controversy when actor Jeffery Tambor left the show after receiving sexual harassment allegations. Since then, Soloway also created another Amazon series I Love Dick, which was also met with much critical acclaim.
The character of Red Sonja is a sword wielding fantasy heroine who first appeared in the Conan the Barbarian series and she was originally created by Marvel Comics, but now she is owned by Dynamite Entertainment. This will not be the first time Red Sonja has appeared in film. An animated movie called Red Sonja: Queen of Plagues came out in 2016, and before that a Red Sonja starring Brigitte Nielsen and Arnold Schwarzenegger came out in 1985.
Removing Singer from the project was probably a smart decision on behalf of Millenium Films that will avoid further backlash. After all Sonja’s original motivation for becoming a warrior is to avenge the deaths of her family and to get revenge on the perpetrators of her sexual assault. It would be in bad taste to allow a man accused of sexual assault to tell a story about a woman who was raped. Hopefully Soloway will give this vengeance-seeking heroine the justice she deserves.
