Bo Burnham’s directorial debut Eighth Grade took Sundance by storm when it premiered at this year’s festival back in January. The stand-up comedian also wrote the script, which follows shy Kayla (Elsie Fisher) as she tries to survive the last week of her eighth-grade school year in the modern age of growing up. Now, A24 has released the first official trailer so the rest of the world can get a glimpse at the breakout hit of one the world’s biggest film festivals.
Earlier this year, A24 released the trailer for their up-coming thriller Hereditary, and now with the hype surrounding Eighth Grade, the indie studio is looking to have another big year after previous successes with the likes of Lady Bird and Moonlight. The new trailer shows the self-conscious Kayla, who operates her own YouTube channel.
The film also stars Josh Hamilton as her knowingly out-of-touch father doing his best to support his little girl in this trying time in her adolescent life. A scene in the trailer shows Kayla burning a shoebox with her dad asking, “What was in there?” to which she responds, “Just sort of my hopes and dreams.”
