Paramount Pictures isn’t feeling the need to speed Top Gun: Maverick to theaters anytime soon. Because of the coronavirus, the sequel to the 1986 cult classic is being pushed back to December 23, 2020. Originally planned for June, Paramount made their decision in the light of the current emergency, and most theaters in the United States shutting their doors, to push back several of their films theatrical releases.
In Top Gun: Maverick, Tom Cruise reprises his iconic role of Pete “Maverick” Mitchell, who has taken a job at the Navel Fighter Weapons School teaching new recruits to fly. Miles Teller plays Bradley “Rooster” Bradshaw, the son of Maverick’s old friend and partner “Goose.” Val Kilmer will return tas “Iceman,” with whom Maverick has a competitive camaraderie. Jennifer Connelly joins the cast as Penny Benjamin, Maverick’s new love interest.
A Top Gun sequel has been in the works since arguably 2010, but it wasn’t until 2017 that Tom Cruise confirmed a set title for the project. Along with Cruise, Jerry Bruckheimer, Christopher McQuarrie, David Ellison have been signed on as producers, and director Joseph Kosinski (Tron: Legacy) was hired to direct the film. The first trailer premiered at SDCC 2019, with a second trailer following in December. As for Kenny Loggin’s iconic theme, “Danger Zone,” the singer confirmed it was also making a comeback in the sequel.
