Tom Holland Picks Owen Cooper As His Spider-Man Successor

Tom Holland has played Peter Parker for 10 years now, first appearing as Spider-Man in 2016’s Captain America: Civil War. Now, at the age of 30, Holland is about to appear in his fourth Spider-Man film (seven total appearances). In an interview, the actor was asked if he had a particular successor in mind to play Peter Parker when he inevitably ages out of the role. He said, “Owen Cooper would be awesome. Obviously, he’s super-talented and the talk of the town right now.”

Owen Cooper received wide acclaim for his role in the Netflix limited series Adolescence, which won numerous awards, including BAFTAs, Golden Globes, and Emmys. Holland seems to be aware that he cannot go on playing Spider-Man forever, as in the interview he discussed what the future of the character could look like. He also mentioned wanting be involved in future projects even if he no longer stars in them. He said, “In the way that Robert Downey was such a mentor for me in my first three movies, I would love to be that person for whoever is next. For whoever’s next, whether that is a Miles Morales or a Spider-Gwen or a Spider-Woman or something like that, I would love to be a part of setting up the next chapter.” He went on to add, “Whatever that looks like, I don’t know. But if I could do what Downey did for me, then I would be so content swinging off into the sunset.” The actor clearly wants to stay involved with the character, and who knows, maybe years down the line he could appear in a legacy capacity like Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield did in Spider-Man: No Way Home.

But before all that, Tom Holland still has at least one more Spider-Man movie in him. Spider-Man: Brand New Day releases in theaters on July 31, where he will have to face off against the likes of The Scorpion, The Punisher, and more. The film also stars  Zendaya, Jacob Batalon, Michael Mando, Mark Ruffalo, Sadie Sink, Jon Bernthal and Tramell Tillman.
