Tom Hiddleston will star in an origin story of King Kong entitled Skull Island for the island Kong called home. The film was revealed at this year’s San Diego Comic Con and will release on November 4, 2016. John Vogt-Roberts – currently working on a film adaptation of Metal Gear Solid for Sony – will direct a script from Max Borenstein.
The original 1933 King Kong film told the story of a film crew traveling to a mysterious island inhabited by dinosaurs and a giant ape named Kong. Kong becomes extremely protective of the actress traveling with the crew, fighting off dinosaurs and people to keep her safe. Eventually the crew subdues Kong and decides to take him back to New York so they can make a fortune showing off “the Eighth Wonder of the World” to audiences. The film has been remade twice, first in 1976 by Dino De Laurentiis, and again in 2005 by Peter Jackson. Skull Island is intended as a prequel to the classic story, though Legendary has not stated if it will connect to any specific film or launch an entirely new continuity.
Lately, Legendary has demonstrated a fondness for giant monsters with Pacific Rim and Godzilla, both of which have sequels in the works. The Godzilla sequel is already confirmed to feature classic opponents Mothra, Rodan, and Ghidorah. Godzilla also fought King Kong in 1962 in the appropriately named King Kong vs. Godzilla. With Legendary in control of the continuities for both iconic monsters, a rematch can’t be out of the question.
