Tom Cruise’s Comedic Collaboration With Alejandro G. Iñárritu, ‘Digger’ Will Reportedly Cost $125 Million

Tom Cruise’s upcoming comedy film, Digger, directed by Alejandro G. Iñárritu, will reportedly have a massive nine-figure budget, according to Screen Rant.

Announced in November, with teaser trailer following in mid-December, Digger will reportedly follow “the most powerful man in the world,” who causes a disaster and then tries to frame himself as humanity’s savior. The film will be Iñárritu’s first English-language project in a decade since the award-winning The Revenant in 2015, and Cruise’s first non-franchise action project in eight years since 2017’s American Made.

At the time of the announcement, Cruise released a statement online discussing working with the director:

Today, I share the first photo taken last year during a rehearsal on the set of my new film with Alejandro G. Iñãrritu. Alejandro, 25 years ago, I watched your first film, the classic Amores Perros. This weekend…I was deeply moved to have been presented the Honorary Oscar by you, my dear friend. I cannot wait to share our new film with you all next year!

Now, it is being reported that Digger will carry a hefty $125 million budget, with one analyst comparing it to Paul Thomas Anderson’s One Battle After Another, which had similar budget and awards-centric release date. Despite being critically acclaimed, the latter struggled to make a profit at the box office, a trend that has become more common for original large-budget blockbusters, a factor that One Battle After Another star Leonardo DiCaprio echoed in a recent interview.

Along with Cruise, Digger will also star Riz Ahmed, Emma D’Arcy, Jesse Plemons, John Goodman, and Sandra Hüller. It is scheduled for release on October 2nd, 2026.
