Universal has announced that the movie formerly known as Mena, now entitled American Made, will have later release date of September 29th 2017 instead of January 6th 2017. Starring Tom Cruise and directed by Doug Liman, who previously teamed on 2014’s Edge of Tomorrow, the cast also includes Domnhall Gleeson (The Revenant), Jesse Plemons (Bridge of Spies), and Sarah Wright (TV’s Marry Me) among others.
With a screenplay by Gary Spinelli (Stash House), the feature is based on a true story of American pilot Barry Seal (Cruise) who ran drugs in the in the 1980s for cocaine kingpin Pablo Escobar. Seal was later recruited by the CIA to run one of the biggest covert operations in history.
The film is financed by Cross Creek Pictures, with Universal handling distribution and marketing duties. The move from January to September may be a significant one, putting American Made into closer possible Academy Award contention.
Production on the film was touched by tragedy last September when two crew members were killed and a third severely injured during filming in Colombia.
American Made is currently in post-production.
