Sister Act 3 has a director and writer!
According to Deadline, the third installment in the Sister Act franchise is gaining traction at Disney. Tim Federle has been tapped to the helm, with Madhuri Shekar penning the story for the sequel, which will feature Whoopi Goldberg.
Goldberg will return as Deloris, the nightclub singer turned nun, and will co-produce the film with Tyler Perry.
The original film featured Deloris, a nightclub singer who is forced to hide as a nun at a convent and accidentally transforms the convent choir into a soulful chorus complete with a Motown repertoire until the choir’s unexpected success jeopardizes her identity. The initial film was a tremendous success, prompting a sequel in 1993.
Federle is behind the successful reboot of the GLAAD-award-winning Disney series High School Musical: The Musical, which is heading to its third season on Disney+. Sources also say that his work on the upcoming Disney+ film Better Nate Than Ever, starring Lisa Kudrow, was one of the reasons why he was picked to direct Sister Act 3.
Shekar’s most recent project was the 2020 Amazon/Blumhouse film Evil Eye. Levantine Films is also adapting her play, A Nice Indian Boy, into a movie.
Currently, the details about the third installment of the Sister Act are unknown.
