Considering its wacky style and subject matter, the YA novel Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children by Ransom Riggs seems absolutely perfect for quirky director Tim Burton. Although audiences were supposed to have seen it already because of the original Summer 2015 date it once had, it was moved back to March of this year, then to December, and has been re-set once again by 20th Century Fox for this fall. Because of its relatively soon release, it’s quite possible fans could be seeing a trailer popping up sometime in the next month or two.
The fantasy film stars Eva Green (Dark Shadows) as the title character, along with the young rising star Asa Butterfield (Hugo). Butterfield’s character is young, troubled boy who discovers a magical home that’s filled with peculiar children, all of whom possess strange abilities. Besides the two leads, Samuel L. Jackson, Dame Judi Dench, and Rupert Everett also star in supporting roles.
The official release for the film is September 30, 2016. Seeing as how a spot like this comes right at the beginning of the 2017 Oscar season, we could be hearing even more about this film come December and January. Burton’s last films have had various results, both critically and financially. His 2014 biopic Big Eyes was well-recevied but fell way under the radar with most, 2012’s Frankenweenie was highly praised for its style and heartfelt story but made weak waves at the box office, and 2012’s Dark Shadows fell short on most fronts. Hopefully this will be a return to form for the renowned director.
Burton’s Alice in Wonderland sequel, Alice Through the Looking Glass (to which he now only holds a producer credit), is set for release by Disney on May 27, 2016 followed by Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children on September 30.
