Marvel Studios has just announced when Thunderbolts*, or The New Avengers, will be hitting streaming. The film is set to land on Disney+ on August 27. The film released on May 2, meaning it took about 4 months to land on Disney’s streamer after its theatrical release.
Thunderbolts* released to critical acclaim upon release, with many calling the film one of Marvel’s best projects in recent years. Their previous project, Captain America: Brave New World, released on February 14 but did not receive as warm a welcome. Brave New World currently sports a 46% on Rotten Tomatoes, with Thunderbolts* faring much better with an 88%. However, Thunderbolts* performed rather poorly at the box office, especially for a Marvel Studios release. The film only grossed $382 million worldwide, landing well below expectations and likely was not profitable for Marvel or Disney. Brave New World did not do much better, racking $415 million. Both films fell below $500 million, a benchmark that used to be a staple for Marvel Studios films. The Fantastic Four: First Steps is performing a bit better, but for now, it still rests below that marker, currently grossing around $440 million.
Marvel has now had 3 disappointing returns in a row this year, which could be concerning for the future of the MCU. The next films in their lineup are Spider-Man: Brand New Day and Avengers: Doomsday, both releasing in 2026. Thunderbolts* teased the events of Avengers: Doomsday, with the Russo Brothers even directing the scene. The pair is returning to direct the film after helming the previous two Avengers films.
