In numerous reports, sources believe the X-Men series will get a soft reboot for the MCU. Disney recently announced that Marvel Studios is scheduled to release an untitled movie on Dec. 15, 2028. That addition marks the fourth feature from the division set for that calendar year. Previously announced films are scheduled for release in February, May and November of 2028.
There were reports in May that Thunderbolts* director Jake Schreier was in early talks to direct X-Men, including speculation that the director was turning down other projects to make room for Marvel, but there were no confirmation reports until now.
The Thunderbolts* script was written by Michael Lesslie and produced by Kevin Feige. The film had a promising opening weekend, but only made $380 million against a $180 million budget.
MCU fans have been hoping for a long time for any signs of the X-Men transitioning to the MCU after Disney bought Fox, and there have been some mentions in MCU projects such as Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, Ms. Marvel, The Marvels and Deadpool & Wolverine.
Many stars of the Fox-produced X-Men films will appear in Avengers: Doomsday. In the film’s cast announcement, Kelsey Grammer, Patrick Stewart, Ian McKellen, Alan Cumming, Rebecca Romijn and James Marsden were among the X-Men announced. Additionally, Channing Tatum’s version of Gambit, who made his debut in Deadpool & Wolverine, was announced in the Doomsday casting as well.
With his appearance in Deadpool, there is also speculation that Hugh Jackman may return as the beloved Wolverine.
